Tom Swidler, Founder and Managing Member
Tom Swidler is the Managing Member of Tavistock Capital. Prior to forming Tavistock in 2000, he was a Vice President of IBM for five years.
While at IBM, Tom led the provision of IBM services to one of the world's leading e-Business firms, which enabled the client to globally transform processes and build new applications in a scaleable, available and secure environment during a period of extreme growth. Prior to this, he led IBM's global Securities and Capital Markets Solutions business unit. These responsibilities included conceiving and developing IBM proprietary capital market solutions in an in-house incubator as well as establishing and managing IBM's worldwide business partnerships and strategic alliances in capital markets.
Tom's initial IBM assignment was establishing and then leading the IBM Asia Pacific Banking, Finance, and Securities consulting practice. He resided in Singapore and founded consultancies throughout Asia, the largest one being in Japan.
Tom has been providing professional services to the financial services industry since 1986. He was Director of the Capital Markets Group of Deloitte & Touche for five years and then a partner in the Secura Group, in which Andersen Consulting was a limited partner. His focus was on strategic planning, M&A, and risk management.
Prior to 1986, Tom was a banker for over 20 years with residence in Europe and Asia. He is fluent in German, Spanish and French.
Tom held senior management positions with Bank of America for 12 years. He was responsible for its $7 billion in assets and 2,000 employee Far East operation, was Executive Officer of Commercial Insurance, Chairman of B of A's Lloyd's financial guaranty insurance broker, managed part of the Bank's loan syndication program, led Bank of America's wholly owned German retail banking subsidiary, CC Bank, and was a member of the Bank's Senior Management Council.
Prior to Bank of America, he was a member of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the founder and CEO of a German investment bank which he successfully sold to a major British corporation.
Tom was educated at Yale University. He completed the Stanford Business School's Senior Executive Program for Managing Information Technology. He co-authored an article in the Journal of Corporate Growth on mergers and acquisitions, has written for numerous German publications, and received the Award of Excellence, Technical Paper, Financial Consulting, from Deloitte & Touche in 1990.
Tom has been a guest lecturer at the National Taiwan University and the University of Cologne and led seminars for the Harvard Business School Association, American Management Association's Chief Executives Round Table, and numerous other organizations.
Tom
retired in January 2006 as Brigadier General and Commander of the
California State Military Reserve, the State Defense Force that assists
the California National Guard in its Homeland Defense and Homeland
Security Missions. He also has served on the Joint General Staff as
Deputy Communications Officer of the New York Guard. Tom is recipient of
the Order of California, Medal of Merit (two awards), the California
Commendation Medal (three awards) and other awards and decorations from
the U. S. Army, Military Department of the State of California and
Association of the United States Army (AUSA). He is President of the San
Francisco Chapter of AUSA, and a member of the National Advisory Board,
Chairman of the Novato Police Advisory and Review Board, and a member
of the Diocese of California (Episcopal) Strategic Planning Committee.
